Stacked Discount Calculator
A 20% sale plus a 10% promo code is not always 30% off. Enter your selling price and discounts, then choose how they are applied to see the final selling price and customer savings. Add your product cost if you also want to see gross profit and gross profit margin.
Calculate Stacked Discounts
How stacked discounts are calculated
- One after another: price × (1 − discount 1) × (1 − discount 2) × (1 − discount 3). Each discount comes off the already reduced price.
- Added together: price × (1 − (discount 1 + discount 2 + discount 3)). All discounts come off the full price.
Choose the method your store uses at checkout from the dropdown. Discount 2 and Discount 3 are optional. After changing a number or the method, click Calculate to update the results. Reset restores the example numbers and their results.
Gross profit per sale is the final selling price minus product cost. Gross profit margin is gross profit divided by the final selling price, multiplied by 100. Include supplier shipping in your product cost. Advertising, payment fees and other expenses are not deducted, so gross profit is not your final net profit. Leave product cost blank to show only price and savings.
Worked example
Hypothetical example: selling price 50, product cost 20, a 20% sale plus a 10% code. The calculator initially shows the price and discounts; enter a product cost of 20 to see the gross profit figures below.
| One after another | Added together | |
|---|---|---|
| Original selling price | 50.00 | 50.00 |
| Product cost | 20.00 | 20.00 |
| 20% discount | 10.00 (20% of 50.00) | 10.00 (20% of 50.00) |
| Plus 10% discount | 4.00 (10% of 40.00) | 5.00 (10% of 50.00) |
| Final selling price | 36.00 | 35.00 |
| Customer savings | 14.00 (28.0%) | 15.00 (30.0%) |
| Gross profit per sale | 16.00 | 15.00 |
| Gross profit margin | 44.4% | 42.9% |
In this example, applying the discounts one after another gives an effective discount of 28%, while adding them together gives 30%. The calculator shows one set of results for your selected method. Switch the dropdown and click Calculate to compare without re-entering your numbers.
Stacked discount FAQ
Do two 10% discounts equal 20%?
Only if they are added together. One after another they come to 19%.
Which method does my store use?
It depends on your platform and settings. Run a test order with both discounts and compare the final price with the two columns above.
Why are no profit figures showing?
Enter your optional product cost to show gross profit and gross profit margin. A blank cost is not treated as zero. If the final selling price is zero, the margin is shown as n/a because it cannot be calculated as a percentage of zero.
What happens if added discounts exceed 100%?
The total discount is capped at 100%, so the selling price cannot fall below zero.
